Actors
from The Mad Alice Theatre Company have delivered drama and music workshops
in schools to pupils who attended a performance of The Tempest. The workshops
used movement and music as well as drama to introduce the children to
the text. Children also learned techniques used by actors to warm up their
voice and body and to stimulate the creative process. These workshops
prepared children for the performance and as a result children gained
far more out of the experience.
These workshops were funded by Coalfield Regeneration Trust, The Co-operative Membership Community Fund and Arts Council England.

Children also worked with digital artist, Helen Ward, on the creation
of fantasy self portait images inspired by The Tempest. Using masks made
in workshops with artists Jane Crawford and Paul Belcher and costumes
supplied by Suzy Galbraith the children took photographs of each other
and then used Image Manipulation tools to place themselves in fantasy
backgrounds; either from photographs, books or drawn. The Themes
were based around Earth, Air, Water and Fire. The finished work
is a series of A4 images suitable for exhibition.

The children wore these masks and costumes when attending the performance
where they provided pre show entertainment, devised in workshops with
Mad Alice.
A similar workshop package was delivered in connection with Mad Alice's
production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. In addition children made lanterns
with Shelley O'Brien and Paul Belcher which the children used in the final
procession in the play. Children also worked with musician Benny Graham
on Local Victorian Music.
These
workshops were supported by the Coalfield Regeneration Trust, Network
Fund for Children and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
